How to play

Merge matching tiles by sliding the board to reach the 2048 tile — then keep going and blow past your record.

Game rules

The board is a four-by-four grid where tiles appear carrying powers of two.
Slide in one direction and every tile shoots that way until it hits the edge or another tile.
When two tiles of the same value meet, they merge into one worth double (2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8, and so on).
Every move drops a new tile — usually a 2, sometimes a 4 — onto a free square.
Chain your merges to grow your tiles all the way to 2048, without letting the board clog up.

How a run ends

There is no timer. The game locks up when the board is full and no merge is possible in any direction. Reaching 2048 counts as the win, but nothing forces you to stop there.

Tips & strategy

Pick a corner and never leave it

Keep your biggest tile pinned in one corner — bottom right, say — and never use the direction that would pull it out. Everything else you do is built around that anchor.

Stack your tiles in a staircase

Along the edge that touches your biggest tile, line the values up in descending order. That staircase sets up chain merges: the 512 eats the 512, and the result can merge straight into the 1024 next to it.

Avoid improvised sideways slides

If you are playing two main directions (down and right, for instance), only break out as a last resort. One careless slide scatters your big tiles and wrecks the staircase. Think before every move.

Did you know?

2048 was built over a weekend in March 2014 by a 19-year-old Italian, Gabriele Cirulli, who released it free and open source "to see whether he could code it". It went viral within days and racked up millions of games.

It borrows from earlier games of its own, notably Threes! and 1024. That stripped-back idea — merge numbers that double — made it one of the most cloned web puzzles ever written. 2048 Néon keeps the mechanic exactly as it is, under bright neon.
