About this game

Néon Match is a matching game — the great match-3 classic — dressed in a polished retro-neon skin with a modern feel, smooth and responsive. The idea is universal: an eight-by-eight grid fills with glowing gems, and you swap two neighbouring gems to line up at least three of the same colour, in a row or a column. They burst in a spray of light and score you points; the gems above fall under gravity, new ones drop in from the top, and if that fall creates fresh lines it is a cascade: the deeper it goes, the higher the combo multiplier climbs. A swap that lines nothing up is undone and costs you no move. Big lines are rewarded with special gems: a line of four makes a striped gem, which bursts its whole row and column; a line of five makes a colour bomb, which clears every gem of the colour you swap it with; an L- or T-shaped crossing makes an area bomb, which bursts the 3×3 block around it. To set off a special gem, swap it with a neighbour. If no move is left, the grid reshuffles itself. The game has two ways to play. Classic mode gives you thirty moves to post the biggest score you can, with six gem colours: that is the one the leaderboard counts. Chests mode, reached with the mode button in the game, offers 20 chests to open in 17 to 20 moves each, with one goal per chest: break every padlock set under the gems (some have two layers), bring gold keys down to the bottom of the grid, collect a number of gems of one colour, or reach a score. Opening a chest earns one, two or three stars depending on the moves you have left (two stars with at least a fifth of your moves in reserve, three with at least two fifths) and unlocks the next chest; if you run out of moves you try the same chest again. On mobile, tap a gem then a neighbour, or drag a gem in the direction you want; on a computer, move the cursor with the arrow keys (or W A S D) and confirm with Space or Enter. Gems differ by shape as well as by hue, so they stay readable with colour blindness. Néon Match is free in your browser, with nothing to install. How to play

Swap neighbouring gems to line up three or more matching symbols: score as much as you can in 30 moves in Classic mode, or fill the goal of each of the 20 chests in Chests mode.

Game rules

The 8×8 grid is filled with gems of several colours: six in Classic mode, five or six depending on the chest.
Swap two neighbouring gems to line up at least three matching gems in a row or a column. A swap that lines nothing up is undone, with no penalty and no move lost.
A successful line bursts the gems involved and scores points: 10 per gem, multiplied by the rank of the burst within the move (×1 for the first, ×2 for the second, ×3 for the third…).
The gems above fall in under gravity and new ones drop in from the top. If those falls create fresh lines, a cascade fires and your combo climbs.
A line of 4 makes a striped gem (it bursts its row and column), a line of 5 makes a colour bomb (it clears every gem of the colour you swap it with), and an L- or T-shaped crossing makes an area bomb (it bursts the 3×3 block around it). Swap a special gem with its neighbour to set it off.
Classic mode: you get 30 moves in all, a move being a swap that does something. If no move is left, the grid reshuffles.

How a run ends

In Classic mode the game ends when you have played your 30 moves: there is no defeat, and your score is the one the leaderboard keeps. In Chests mode you open the chest as soon as all its goals are reached, and you lose the round if your moves hit zero first: you can then replay it. Only Classic mode counts for the leaderboard; chests earn stars and trophies, and your map progress is saved on your device.

Tips & strategy

Set off cascades

A line at the bottom of the grid drops everything above it and often triggers chain combos. Aim for low swaps rather than high ones to get the most free cascades.

Make every move count

With 30 moves (17 to 20 in a chest), skip small lines of three when one shift can set up a bigger one. A well-chosen swap that chains combos is worth several wasted moves.

Save moves for the stars

In a chest, finishing with moves to spare is what earns 2 and 3 stars. Look for special gems that advance several goals at once, such as an area bomb on a cluster of padlocks.

Bring the keys down

A gold key cannot be lined up: it falls when the gems under it disappear. Burst the columns beneath the key to carry it to the bottom of the grid.

Scan before you swap

A swap with no line is undone at no penalty, but it costs you thinking time. Sweep the grid with your eyes and spot the best available move before you shift a gem.

Did you know?

The match-3 as we know it was popularised by Bejeweled, made by PopCap Games in 2001 from a web game called Diamond Mine. Its idea of swapping neighbouring gems to form lines of three became a mainstream puzzle standard.

The genre exploded a second time with Candy Crush Saga in 2012, which brought level-based structure and varied goals. Néon Match takes both: the 30-move Classic mode for the score, and the chests for goal-based progression.
