About this game
Néon Paddles is the great paddle-game classic reworked in a polished retro-neon skin: the electronic table tennis of the very first arcade cabinets, the duel that launched video games, brought up to date for your browser. The idea is crisp and fiercely addictive: a white ball races around a vertical court, bounces off the side walls, and you have to return it with your cyan paddle at the bottom while the magenta AI defends the top. Every bounce counts: depending on where the ball meets your paddle it leaves at a steeper or shallower angle — dead centre and it flies straight, on the edges and it slices across, enough to wrong-foot the AI. Unlike the old "first to seven" match, Néon Paddles is a survival mode: your score is the number of points you put behind your opponent, and you have three lives. You lose one every time the ball gets past you. With every point you score the ball speeds up a little more and the AI gets sharper: the game builds crescendo, up to a frantic pace that tests your reflexes. Rest assured, the AI stays beatable: its speed is capped below the ball’s by the late game, so everything comes down to your positioning and your reading. The controls are built for touch as much as for the keyboard: on mobile you slide your thumb in a dedicated band below your paddle to steer it directly, and tap to serve; on a computer the left and right arrows move the paddle and the spacebar serves. A countdown runs before every serve to let you get set. The white ball with its violet halo, the trail that stretches with speed, the dotted centre net and the flashes on impact give sharp, readable feedback at sixty frames per second, with a discreet synthesised cue on every bounce. The two sides are told apart by position and by the "YOU" and "AI" labels, not by colour alone, so they stay readable with colour blindness. How to play
Return the ball with your cyan paddle and get it past the magenta AI to score, on a vertical court.
Game rules
- A countdown runs, then you serve the ball towards the top of the court.
- Move your cyan paddle at the bottom to intercept the ball on its way back down.
- The ball bounces off the side walls, and the angle it leaves at depends on where it hits your paddle.
- Hit it dead centre for a straight return, or on the edges to send it slicing across and catch the AI out.
- Every time you score behind the AI, both the ball and your opponent step up a gear.
- You have 3 lives: a ball that gets past you costs one, and the run ends at zero.

How a run ends
This is survival mode: you keep scoring for as long as you hold on, but the run ends the moment you lose your 3 lives. Your final score is the number of points you put past the AI.
Tips & strategy
Aim with the edges
Catching the ball on the edge of your paddle sends it back at a sharp angle. It is the best way to push the ball into a corner the AI will struggle to reach.
Come back to the middle
Between rallies, bring your paddle back towards the centre. You cut the distance you have to cover on either side and react faster once the ball speeds up.
Read the wall bounces
The ball rebounds cleanly off the side walls, with no surprise spin. Follow its line from the bounce rather than waiting for it to arrive, and you will already be in position.

The electronic paddle duel is one of the very first mainstream video games: it appeared in arcades in the early 1970s and boiled a game of table tennis down to the essentials — two paddles, one ball, no scenery at all. That extreme simplicity launched the entire arcade industry.
Néon Paddles keeps that founding mechanic but turns the court vertical and adds a modern layer: return angle based on the point of impact, a steady speed-up and a lives system. The "one ball, two paddles" spirit is intact, more than fifty years on.
