About this game

Néon Hop is a nervy endless arcade game in a retro-neon skin, in the lineage of the great crossing games, rebuilt with a bright look and a modern feel. You play a cyan orb — the brightest thing on screen — hopping one square at a time through an endless run of rows generated as you go. Each row is either safe ground, where you can stop and think, or a road carrying a stream of neon cars: one contact with a vehicle and the run stops dead. The whole game is about reading the traffic, spotting the gaps between two cars and jumping at the right moment, without ever standing still for long. Because behind you a neon wave climbs relentlessly: a line of light rising from the bottom of the screen that takes you if you hesitate. Moving forward is a permanent obligation — and that is what turns a simple crossing into a race against the clock. Your score is simply the highest row you reach: pushing past your previous best earns points, while going backwards or standing still earns nothing. Simple to grasp, perfect for "one more go". The difficulty rises in carefully dosed steps: the further you get, the more roads there are, the faster and tighter the cars, and the quicker the wave. But the game stays fair throughout: there is always at least one crossable gap between cars, never an impassable wall, and the first rows are always safe so you can settle in. The controls are built for touch as much as for the keyboard: on mobile a tap anywhere moves you forward and a swipe up, down, left or right moves you that way to dodge; on a computer the arrow keys or W A S D (plus the spacebar to advance) answer instantly. Every hop lands with an elastic squash and a discreet sound, all at 60 frames per second. The neon look tells safe lanes from dangerous roads by shape and texture as well as colour — readability that matters when every tenth of a second counts. Néon Hop is free and instant in your browser, nothing to install, on desktop and mobile alike. Create an account to sync your high scores, enter the leaderboards and unlock trophies as you cross. How far will you get before the wave takes you?

How to play

Cross as many rows as you can, dodging the neon traffic, and never let the wave rising behind you catch up.

  1. Your orb moves one square at a time across an endless run of rows.
  2. Rows are either safe ground or roads with neon cars tearing along them: one touch and the run is over.
  3. Behind you, a neon wave climbs without stopping — hesitate too long and it takes you.
  4. Moving forward is not optional: keep going to stay ahead of the wave.
  5. Your score is the highest row you reach.
  6. The further up you go, the more roads there are, the faster the cars and the quicker the wave.

How a run ends

There is no finish line: you play to get as far as you can. The run ends the moment a neon car hits you, or the rising wave catches you.

Tips & strategy

Read the traffic before you commit

Before stepping onto a road, clock the rhythm and the gaps between cars. One beat of patience beats a hop that puts you straight under a neon headlight.

Use the sideways moves

Sliding left or right on a safe row lets you line up with a gap in the next road. Dodging is not just about escaping — it sets up the crossing after this one.

Bank a lead on the wave

Never come to a full stop, even on safe ground: the wave speeds up with your score. A small cushion buys you the luxury of waiting for a clean window on the busy roads.

Did you know?

Hopping across obstacles comes straight from Frogger, the 1981 Konami/Sega cabinet where a frog had to cross a road and then a river. It was one of the first games to ask for patience and timing rather than shooting reflexes.

The endless top-down format was revived by Crossy Road in 2014, which added infinite scrolling and a camera that forces you forward without let-up. Néon Hop inherits both ideas: the measured crossings of Frogger and the constant push to go one row further.

Frequently asked questions

Is Néon Hop free to play?
Yes. Néon Hop is completely free and runs straight in your browser — no download, no install, no paywall.
How do you play Néon Hop?
Hit “Play” to start Néon Hop. It runs on keyboard on desktop and on touch controls on phones and tablets — no controller needed.
Do I need an account to play?
No — you can play right away as a guest, and your best score is kept on this device. A free account (by email link, no password) syncs your high scores, puts you on the leaderboards and unlocks trophies.
Does Néon Hop work on mobile?
Yes. The game is responsive and fully playable with your fingers on phones and tablets, just like on desktop, with no app to install.
What is the neon wave chasing me for?
It stops you camping on a safe square while you wait for the perfect crossing. Because it rises non-stop and speeds up with your score, it pushes you into quick decisions instead of endless hesitation.
Is it better to go straight up or zigzag?
Both. Moving forward is what scores, but stepping sideways lets you aim for the gaps in the traffic. The best players alternate: push up, then shuffle across to line up the next crossing.
