Three shoot’em ups, three ways to play

From a distance these are three neon shooters with a ship, some enemies and a score. Put side by side on what they actually ask of your hands and your head, they are three games with almost nothing in common. Here is the comparison, axis by axis.

The same genre does not mean the same game

A shooter is quick to sum up: enemies come, you shoot, you dodge. That summary is accurate for all three titles compared here, and it tells you nothing useful — because the question that matters is not “what do you do?” but “what kills you?”. And these three games answer differently.

In one sentence each, here is the problem the game sets you:

  • Néon Assault — a formation of enemies that speeds up as you empty it: the better you do, the faster it gets.
  • Néon Front — a density of simultaneous enemies that climbs wave after wave, with four behaviours stacking on top of one another.
  • Néon Starship — a resource that recharges slowly and has to be spent at the right moment, not at the first moment.

Those three problems are not solved with the same reflexes. That is why being good at one of the three does not automatically make you good at the other two, and why all three can live in the catalogue without overlapping.

Axis 1 — What your hands do

Movement is the most immediate difference, and it is often what decides whether you like a game within ten seconds.

  • Néon Assault confines you to a single axis: your ship goes left and right at the bottom of the screen, and that is all. Fire happens on its own. So you only ever have one decision to make — where to sit on that line.
  • Néon Starship adds the vertical: you move in all four directions inside a horizontal playfield while the scenery scrolls past. Fire is automatic here too, but you have a second button to manage.
  • Néon Front separates your two hands entirely: one control moves your soldier, the other picks the direction you shoot in — and the two are completely independent. You can back away while firing forwards.

That last arrangement, known as “twin-stick”, is the hardest of the three to pick up: aiming and moving become two independent problems, which is disorienting at first and very satisfying afterwards. Movement on a single axis, by contrast, needs no explanation at all.

Automatic fire is not a favour

In two of the three games your cannon fires by itself at a fixed rate. That is not a helping hand: it is a design choice that moves the whole interest onto placement. Since you cannot shoot faster, your only room to improve is being in the right place at the right time.

Axis 2 — Where the danger comes from

The direction the threat comes from completely changes the way you read the screen. In Néon Assault, everything comes down from the top, as one block: a formation seven columns by five rows, thirty-five enemies when it is full, sliding sideways and dropping a notch every time it touches an edge. The threat is single, legible and entirely predictable.

In Néon Front it comes from everywhere — the top and both sides — and above all it is not uniform. Four enemy types take turns, and each kills you differently: the grunt walks at you and hurts on contact, the gunner keeps its distance and opens fire, the rusher charges in a straight line, the tank soaks damage and pounds away.

Their real stats, which explain the order to deal with them in:

  • Grunt — 1 hit point, 92 px/s, 30 points.
  • Rusher — 1 hit point, 190 px/s, 45 points: twice as fast, kill it first.
  • Gunner — 2 hit points, 60 px/s, 60 points; it tries to hold 320 pixels away from you.
  • Tank — 6 hit points, 44 px/s, 200 points: slow, but it will not go down to one burst.

Those types are not all available from the start: the gunner only shows up from the second wave, the rusher from the third, and a tank opens every fifth wave. The game teaches you one threat at a time. Néon Starship, for its part, brings all the danger from one side — the right — but adds indestructible obstacles: some elements cannot be destroyed, only avoided, which neither of the other two games does.

Axis 3 — Tempo

The three fire rates are close, and that is exactly what makes the comparison interesting: 280 milliseconds between shots in Néon Assault, 260 in Néon Starship, 220 in Néon Front — between three and four and a half shots a second. The difference in feel does not come from there.

It comes from structure. Néon Assault advances in clean waves, separated by a banner: you clear, you breathe, you start again faster. Néon Front alternates waves and brief pauses, and hands you pick-ups that drop your fire interval to 110 milliseconds for seven seconds — a temporary intensity spike that deliberately breaks the tempo. Néon Starship runs on long cycles: twenty-two enemies to get through before a boss shows up at the end of the cycle.

The resource that changes everything

Néon Starship has a gauge that fills on its own in about 7.1 seconds and releases a piercing beam worth twelve times the damage of a normal shot. It never fires by itself: once full, it waits indefinitely for you to press. The whole game lives inside that wait — fire now at three small enemies, or hold the charge for the boss.

Axis 4 — Three difficulty engines

This is where the three designs part company most sharply, because they do not raise the pressure with the same lever.

Néon Assault uses an almost cruel mechanism: the formation speeds up by 1.8 pixels per second for every enemy destroyed. Emptying a full formation of thirty-five enemies therefore adds over 61 pixels per second of sideways speed to the last survivors. The end of every wave is mechanically tenser than its start, and it is your own success that produces that tension. On top of that come 18 pixels per second per wave cleared, up to a ceiling of 380.

Néon Front plays on numbers instead. A wave holds 6 enemies at the start and 3 more per wave, up to a maximum of 26. But the figure that really counts is elsewhere: the number of enemies alive AT THE SAME TIME is capped, at 7 on the first wave, then one more per wave, up to 18 at most. That cap is what makes the difficulty — seven opponents on screen can be managed, eighteen force you to choose where to look.

Néon Starship does neither: it speeds everything up. Every cycle adds 12% to enemy speed, up to a ceiling of 2.55 times the starting speed, while the boss goes from 120 hit points on the first cycle to 40 more per cycle after that. And its bosses do not repeat identically: four models come round in rotation — a fortress firing a vertical fan, a ring firing a spiral, a hunter that aims at you, and a barrier that fires curtains with a gap in them.

Néon Assault has bosses too, but built differently: from the fifth wave on, six different wave patterns can come up, and the game guarantees a boss pattern at least every four of them. That boss starts on 42 hit points, gains 4 per wave up to 90, and moves through three increasingly aggressive phases — each announced by a visual tell before the volley.

Which one is for you

All three are free to play with no account, so nothing stops you trying them all. But if you want to go straight to the right one, start from what you enjoy doing.

  • You want to understand the game in five seconds and chase a record — Néon Assault: one axis of movement, one threat, tension that builds by itself.
  • You like overload and juggling several dangers at once — Néon Front: it is the only one of the three where you aim and move independently, and the only one that stacks four enemy behaviours.
  • You would rather anticipate and manage a resource — Néon Starship: the question there is never “can I shoot?” but “should I shoot now?”.

One thing they do share, and it is reassuring: all three give you 3 lives and a brief flashing invincibility after every hit taken, so you do not lose two lives to the same mistake. The rest — your hands, how you read the screen, what puts you under pressure — belongs to each game.
